Do not let the potatoes touch each other. This will cause them to start rotting. Also, burlap sacks work great. Lotsa holes for air and drainage.

For sweet potatoes, start them in an old Mason jar and water, toothpicks in the sides to hold it half out of the water. When the vines are 3-4 inches long pull them out of the potatoe and place in water. Allow a week or so for small roots to start then transplant into barrel or ground. Water well in very good drained soil mound dirt up over stem as it grows. Once the plant dies out dig your potatoes.

Potatoes do not grow well in muddy soil that is why they tell you to make sure you put plenty of drainage holes in whatever you choose to use, so you might want to try doing it again with more drainage holes this time

Couple of comments; 1 be very careful using straw or hay you may introduce unwanted weeds!
2 don't keep your potatoes for seed, diseases in potatoes spread that way. Ie potatoe blight. Seed potatoes are cheap start fresh every spring
3 gardening is fun and a grand experiment try everything anything you want! That's what makes it fun what's the worse that can happen?
