Grist is the nation’s leading green news site, and we have ambitious goals for increasing our traffic in 2012 and beyond. To help us get there, we are seeking an individual who wants to help build and engage strong online communities, social media strategies, and e-mail campaigns. This internship will include hands-on, learning opportunities as a member of a small team and requires attention to detail, analytical skills, and top-notch communication and interpersonal skills. And a sense of humor doesn’t hurt!

Internship Description & Responsibilities:
The primary purpose of this role is to learn about and support Grist’s social media and editorial efforts. As an Intern, you will:
• Research cutting edge social media techniques and best practices
• Monitor social media analytics and report results
• Participate in and initiate conversations with Grist social media audience, with a primary focus on Facebook and Twitter
• Assist with daily administrative tasks and postings
• Implement techniques on a daily basis to grow our online communities and to keep us seen as the go-to source for all environmental news
• Event management support

Qualifications:
1. 3+ years college, a focus on environmental issues, marketing communications, advertising, or PR a plus
2. Desire to take initiative and work independently
3. Strong writing, verbal, and interpersonal social skills
4. Savvy and experience with social networking tools
5. Strong knowledge of online communities
6. Previous blogging experience a plus

EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT

Grist seeks an uber-organized executive assistant to support our Founder and CEO, Chip Giller. The ideal candidate will be experienced in handling a wide range of administrative and executive-support- related tasks and will be able to work independently with little supervision.

Responsibilities:
• Set appointments and maintain CEO’s schedule, including internal/external meetings, calls, and events.
• Manage CEO’s daily activities, ensuring efficient use of time, prioritization of urgent matters, and completion of all tasks on deadline.
• Handle all logistical aspects of CEO’s travel arrangements, including preparing meeting materials and taking all measures to ensure travel is as streamlined as possible.
• Support CEO’s involvement in Grist fundraising efforts, including support for CEO’s participation in donor events.
• Draft correspondence for CEO and assist with meeting follow-up.
• Assist CEO with Board related tasks, including minutes, packet materials, and the planning of four Board meetings per fiscal year.
• Manage CEO’s finances, following up on payables and receivables related to his professional expenses.
• Attend meetings, taking notes and representing CEO when necessary.
• Carry out logistics and planning for internal speaker series, connecting staff to high-profile guests.
• On occasion, organize fun staff activities like a CEO pie throwing contest or an Earth Day trivia and ice cream sundae extravaganza.
• Undertake other business and personal requests as made by the CEO as needed.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree
• 3+ years of experience assisting executives
• Proven ability to organize and schedule work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced environment
• Demonstrated proficiency in writing and editing correspondence
• Experience working with a Board of Directors
• Mad skilz with technology, including deep experience with calendar and database systems and strong comfort working with Gmail and Google  Docs; bonus points for Salesforce experience
• Event-planning experience a plus
• A sense of humor, and a mastery of rolling with the punches

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT INTERN

To help us get there, we are seeking an individual who wants to build strong online advertising and media sponsorship skills in a dynamic and fun environment. This internship will include hands-on, learning opportunities as a member of a small team and requires attention to detail, analytical skills, and top-notch communication and interpersonal skills. And a sense of humor doesn’t hurt!

Internship Description & Responsibilities:
The primary purpose of this role is to learn about and support the Business Development and Earned Income operations at Grist. As an Intern, you will:

  • Help execute online campaigns, promotional contests and offline events
  • Create a variety of reports for the Business Development team, such as campaign performance and delivery
  • Develop and execute lead generation and competitive analysis on an on-going basis, which includes:
    - Tracking and monitoring our competition (blogs, traditional media, etc.)
    - Performing a comprehensive assessment of ‘greenspace’ using online research tools (Google, Comscore, Alexa)
    -Maintaining and updating records of advertising on core competitor sites
  • Help with reader outreach and research
  • Write sample copy as needed for promotions
  • Assist with cross functional projects and ad trafficking as needed

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years college, a focus on environmental issues, marketing communications, advertising, or PR a plus
  • Exceptional communication and creative problem-solving skills.
  • An interest in (and preferably experience with) online media, social networking tools, and the environment.
  • The ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams, and to juggle many different responsibilities.
  • Expertise in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Google Analytics and/or other analytical tools.
  • Experience managing projects and delivering on a deadline
